I can still recall the feeling,
of seeing your eyes for the first time.
Your gaze captured me on my phone screen,
and I was yours that day.

Those longing eyes,
who crave the love from anyone willing to give it.

Your eyes tell me the heartbreak you’ve felt,
when they left you to die.
I know your broken tail continues to wag with even the smallest,
slightest,
ray of hope.
I wonder if that car knew that it hit you?

I can only imagine the despair you felt,
with your fragile skeleton body,
sitting on the concrete floor.
Your hip and rib bones protruding out of your beautiful brown fur,
in a high kill shelter.
Who would have thought,
you were destined to be loved by me?

I’m here to tell you sweet boy,
I’m your hope.  I promise I will sew that
broken heart of yours back together as best as I can.

The little red blanket you were rescued in
the one that has traveled from shelter to home after home,
will stay put.  It will never leave, as you will never
leave.
I promise you.

Those sweet longing soulful eyes,
grabbed me at the perfect time.
I can’t wait to give you all the love I have,
God knows, you deserve it.

  1. I know exactly how you feel about animals. I have taken in rescue animals for years and several have come in to my home and certainly left their mark on my heart. After reading this, I immediately think of my Grissom dog who was a Pappillon, He was about 10 years old when I adopted. He was a product of a puppy mill he was adorable. I had him for about 4 years and enjoyed having him in my life. I cried the night he passed away I was holding him in my arms, knowing I wasn't going to be able to get him to Bangor in time at 10:30 at night. I held him in my arms until he just passed away. His paw prints have left their mark on my heart.

    1. Oh Tim,
This just made me tear up. I'm so sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine going through losing a pet. Your pup was so lucky to have you in his life. If only our pets could age with us... <3

  3. Oh, man, this is one poignant poem. It captures the heart of anyone who has ever loved an animal, especially one who has ever rescued an animal. I love the line "I'm here to tell you, sweet boy, I am your hope." And I love how you promise him. And that you tell him he deserves it. Your poem brings tears to my eyes for all the precious dogs who deserves nothing but love and care.

  4. Such a beautiful heartfelt poem. I am a rescue cat lady, not always to my mother's liking in the past. We have had a couple feral cats end up in the house. Hamlet was my latest rescue from the humane society. He's a black cat who loves nothing more than to lay on the floor with his head in his food dish nibbling away. Catnip, boxes, his own tower. This boy has the good life and all of our hearts.
